Art dealer who discovered new Rembrandt: I knew immediately that it was a real one
For the first time in 44 years a Rembrandt painting has been discovered. It is about the painting Portrait of a young man. Art dealer Jan Six (39) saw the unknown painting in a catalog and knew immediately that he had a special find.
Six, who is an art dealer and specializes in the old masters, tells how he came to the special discovery:
“While browsing through the catalog, I immediately saw a painting that was better than the rest. I started researching and discovered that it was indeed a still unknown painting. I showed it to Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering, but he did not want to make a statement without first looking at the original. I flew to London and when I was really convinced I started looking for an investor who could help me buy the cloth. ”
In one year he did a lot of research himself and he showed several experts the canvas. When Ernst van de Wetering, leader of the Rembrandt Research Project, confirmed his suspicions, Six decided to write a book about it. According to Six, he recognized the Rembrandt among other things by the observing gaze of the young man, this would be typical of Rembrandt’s portraits.
Why no time anyone recognized the painting as a Rembrandt, Six does not understand either: ,, It would be a good question to the auction house, they had the painting in their possession for two years. For me it was immediately clear that this was a Rembr. “Experts say that the painting is probably made around 1634. This is mainly based on the young man’s collar.
The painting was once part of a larger whole. The current theory is that it was a man and a woman who were depicted in full. The female portrait is cut out of the painting. Six: “Maybe we’ll find it again, but there is a chance that everything has disappeared. This has happened before with works by great masters. An example is the Night Watch; it also lacks some strips. ”
Six paid a year and a half ago 156,000 for the painting. The work is immediately available for purchase. Six does not want to lose anything about the asking price, except that the painting is of course offered as a Rembrandt. For a real Rembrandt a lot of money is deposited, sometimes it rises to tens of millions.
The Six family has a special relationship with Rembr. A distant forefather of Jan Six was painted in 1654 by the famous master, with whom the Six family was good friends. It is therefore extra special that this new Rembr. was discovered by a distant descendant of his former friend.
